Radiodetection developments at Cappagh

Contracting company, Cappagh, invests in the latest cable avoidance tool technology to continue reducing utility strikes

Cappagh is a family owned contracting company, based in South-West London, and has over 500  knowledgeable and experienced staff.  Cappagh provides a range of services, including waste management, transport and plant services and utility maintenance.

With over 40 years of experience in repairing, renovating, maintaining and installing utility pipeline infrastructure, Cappagh have built many long-term, multi-million pound relationships and is trusted throughout the industry. Such success is partially down to the use of advanced tools to locate buried utilities. Cappagh Director, Matt Guest, comments, “We’ve been using Radiodetection equipment for many years as it provides our teams with the latest means of detecting underground services prior to carrying out excavation work.”

Matt Guest continues: “We pride ourselves on offering a flawless service and that’s what our customers expect. To achieve this, we’ve taken advantage of Radiodetection’s latest cable avoidance tool (CAT) offering, which allows the CAT to be paired with a mobile phone, to transmit real-time management information from the field, back to the office, for live analysis.”

C.A.T Manager Online, from Radiodetection, is a unique cloud-based, remote management tool that enables near real-time usage monitoring of gC.A.T4 fleets. To utilise the latest technology, Cappagh invested in 162 gC.A.T4 units, replacing their existing eC.A.T4  units. Radiodetection’s gC.A.T4 range seamlessly allows the transfer of data with its Bluetooth connectivity.

The use of Radiodection equipment has allowed Cappagh to reduce utility damage to record lows, and the recent introduction of the new units will enable Cappagh to build on this success. “Over the past few years we have seen record lows in utility damage, and that’s down to our outstanding team, their knowledge, and the equipment they use” says Matt Guest.

John Midlen, UK Sales Engineer at Radiodetection, adds: “We’ve worked with Cappagh for many years, and value their investment and trust in our products. The operatives at Cappagh hold a lot of knowledge on using the relevant equipment prior to digging. That – paired with the use of our technology – has helped Cappagh drive utility damage to a record low. We trust our relationship with Cappagh will continue to grow and they will see the benefits of adopting the C.A.T Manager Online software and gC.A.T4 units.

Cappagh awarded prestigious contract with The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea

The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea has awarded their Drainage Works and Gully Cleansing Services contract to Cappagh, thereby extending the relationship between the two organisations.  The new contract commences on 1st April 2017 and will run to 2022, with an option for the Council to extend for a further period up to 3 years.

Following a rigorous tender process and the subsequent award, Cappagh will be carrying out repairs and maintenance to the existing drainage network, including gully and pipework replacement and cleansing, including gully emptying and jetting.

The anticipated value of the contract is expected to be £1.65M over the initial contract period.

It is intended that other public bodies benefit from the procurement process, being able to procure some or all the Works through a linked Framework Agreement.  In time, the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, Westminster City Council and Kensington and Chelsea’s Tenant Management Organisation may also call upon the services of Cappagh via this Agreement.

Cappagh has worked in the Royal Borough since 2004.  Cappagh’s Managing Director, Michael Ferncombe, said

we are absolutely delighted to have been recognised by Kensington and Chelsea for the excellent service and capabilities we offer our clients.  To continue to provide essential drainage services for the Royal Borough in the Capital was a major objective for us.  The new contract is a departure from the last and we are looking forward to the new challenges it will pose”.

Cappagh Safety Stand down

23rd January Kempton Park

On a freezing foggy January morning over 170Cappagh employees assembled at Kempton Park Racecourse and in Havant, Portsmouth for Cappagh’s Bi-annual Safety Stand down.
Employees braved the cold weather conditions to learn about new safety measures and listen to two guest speakers.  pic1

Cappagh has held these significant events two times per year for a few years now, each one engaging large sections of our workforce in important safety discussions.
Our first guest speaker; Jason Anker works as a motivational and behavioural safety speaker. Having been in a major accident many years ago, on a building site, Jason speaks on the emotional perspective of
why Health and Safety is not just about ticking boxes.

The Cappagh audience walked away from his talk engaged by a new-found awareness how health and safety procedures are there for protection, because they have heard first-hand the effect of when things go wrong.
Jason works with many major Blue Chip companies who have seen the benefit of not just telling staff and contractors what to do, but showing them what the personal effect could be by ignoring Health and Safety guidelines.

P2BS

Proud2bSafe was the brainchild of Jason Anker MBE, who was always concerned about how the impact of his own story of a life changing accident at work would have over time.pic2a
He took 3 years to develop a programme that would revolutionise the way you think about safety, not just in the workplace but in everything you do.
The original live presentations took Jason all over the country and the demand was so high and the need for more and more from companies asking “what’s next” made Jason realise that he had to
develope his programme even further to accommodate the need.
He came up with a format that is now the Proud2bSafe Journey.
For more information on Jason’s story visit the P2BS website http://www.p2bs.org/about-us/

The second speaker of the morning safety session was presented by Louise Taggart whose brother, Michael was electrocuted during a horrific work accident. Louise has told MSPs (Members of Scottish Parliament) that
the process of establishing fatal accident inquiries (FAIs) into workplace deaths must be speeded up.

 FACK

This fatal incident led Louise to set up: Families against corporate killers -FACK - is a national campaigning network which will campaign to stop workers and others being killed in preventable incidents and will direct bereaved families to sources of legal help and emotional support.

Relatives of people killed at work formed this national campaigning group. FACK believes families bereaved because of unsafe and unhealthy workplaces are angry and frustrated. They feel they have been robbed twice: Once of their loved ones in incidents that should have been prevented by employers simply obeying the law on workplace health and safety; and secondly of their right to justice

pic3  The campaign is seeking urgent government action to halt the complacency about deaths at work and decent laws with will bring dangerously negligent bosses to justice. FACK wants a review of the
way work-related deaths are investigated and the way families are treated. And it believes workers and safety reps must be given more rights to protect themselves against exposure to unacceptable
risks to their lives and health. For more information on FACK please visit their website: http://www.fack.org.uk/

Matt Guest Director of Cappagh said:

“We wanted our people to hear first-hand how devastating and long- lasting the impact can be when there is an accident at work. It was great to see the Cappagh workforce so engaged Firstly by
Jason and then Louise’s presentation. The personal impact and the impact on families, friends and colleagues when people are injured really made us all think again about taking those precious few
seconds to consider whether what we all do at work could be achieved safer.”
During our recent Cappagh Safety Stand down, we have increased the emphasis we place on safety performance and the senior managers are committed to driving a positive health and safety
culture through all levels of the business.
