Landmark Portsmouth sewer scheme recognised as Wastewater Project of the Year
Cappagh Browne, in partnership with Lining Division Ltd, has been named a finalist in the Wastewater Project of the Year category at the Water Industry Awards 2026 — recognising a landmark sewer rehabilitation project delivered in one of the South Coast's most environmentally and logistically sensitive locations.
The project involved the rehabilitation of a failing strategic sewer main beneath Eastern Road in Portsmouth — a critical transport corridor and one of only three routes on and off Portsea Island. The asset had suffered 16 bursts in five years, causing repeated disruption to residents, businesses and road users, while posing significant environmental risk. Eastern Road runs immediately adjacent to Langstone Harbour, an area protected under multiple national and international environmental designations including Marine Protected Area, SPA and Ramsar status.
Delivered across five phases over an 18-month period, the project was completed ahead of programme, despite restricted access, severe weather and stringent environmental constraints — and crucially, with zero pollution incidents throughout.
The project achieved a number of industry-leading firsts: the first UK end-to-end relining of a 600mm rising main using Ferro-Force glass-reinforced, pressure-rated CIPP liner; the first installation of this liner system within a Ramsar-protected environment; and the first UK deployment of the VeriCure Cure Monitoring System — a patented, WRc-approved digital temperature sensing technology providing real-time verification of liner curing. The team also installed a 280-metre bespoke liner section to navigate constrained residential areas, avoiding property demolition, and completed 700 metres of lining within a single seven-day period.
