DCRail’s New Class 60 Locomotive ‘Ben More Assynt’ Ready to Move Mountains
12-month overhaul complete as DCRail expands fleet to meet demand
DCRail, part of the Cappagh Group of Companies, has completed a 12-month overhaul of its latest Class 60 heavy freight diesel-electric locomotive, named 'Ben More Assynt' — and it is now ready to play a central role in the company's planned growth.
The overhaul took place at UKRL Loughborough Works, where the engine was originally built, and involved several modifications to improve performance. The locomotive has also been given striking new livery that recognises its heritage and DCRail's links to the wider Cappagh Group.
Ben More Assynt is a rocky mountain in the far north-west of Scotland, standing at 998 metres — the highest point in Sutherland. The name is considered highly appropriate for a locomotive that will be moving mountains of construction materials across the rail network.
David Fletcher, Group Director for Rail at Cappagh, said: "The introduction of 'Ben More Assynt' demonstrates our commitment to grow our rail business with our customers. The finished product is testament to the hard work of the DCRail team led by Richard Ellison, UKRL and the wider supplier base. The overhaul of Ben More Assynt is the first of a number of locomotive overhauls planned by DCRail as the company continues to expand its capacity to meet growing customer demand.
